On Exhibition

bienes importados / imported goods
by Anahí González
continues...

Volunteer Coffee Hour and Artist in Conversation
with Anahí González, moderated by Zwena Gray

Anahí joined us here at Artspace on April 6 to meet and speak with volunteers about her work. What followed was a community conversation about food, migration, and labour that utlized Anahí's work, 'Units Pa' Ya!' - red-painted plastic chairs that functioned as vessels for a conversation.

One of the things that take pride in here at Artspace is how we can serve a place of experimentation for artists, so Anahí worked with our Communications Lead Zwena to turn her artist talk into a community conversation. Questions we asked participants during this event included, "How has your experience with food been shaped by migration or cultural identity?" and, "What's your favourite comfort food?", sparking meaningful conversation and connection for folks around the table.

Haven't had a chance to check out the exhibition? You've got two weeks left! Come out and view bienes importados / imported goods until May 14th.

And, speaking of the 50/50/50, tickets are on sale now!

Our favourite event of the year, Artspace’s annual 50/50 is not only a silly, good time but a great opportunity to bring home the work of a local artist. This year’s event will include the traditional 50/50 draw, door prizes, a fabulous raffle, food and drink, live entertainment, and more! Plus, we’ll be presenting a silent auction, viewable both in-person at the gallery and online. So, stay tuned for that!

This is a chance for art collectors, appreciators, and community members to take home original artwork at an affordable price. All artworks are contributed by regional artists with the raised funds being split between artists and Artspace.

Volunteer Spotlight

Back by popular demand... we're excited to bring back our monthly Volunteer Spotlight!

This month we're highlighting Alexandra, Molly, and Simone, collectively known as Carnal Creations, who will be hosting our Open Studio "Artist Gardening" session on May 30th.

Carnal Carnations began as a virtual continuous dinner party hosted by Simone & Molly. Here they share their meals, nutritional information, and build their relationship to (mostly) edible plants. Alexandra tags along sometimes. Our collective hope is to extend and build care for one another over the growth and preparation of food. To practice inter-dependance and skill sharing. To learn about histories through making food. To meet each other across far distances through meal-time.

Simone is painter, crocheter, and a recovering florist. She maintains a studio practice out of the 221A Studio and draws upon pastoral and coastal atmospheres in her imagery. Molly is an artist, home cook, and educator who has experience in generational and urban farming. With a background in illustration, Molly is working on her first cookbook between her teaching hours. Alexandra is an artist and art administrator. Currently, Alexandra is recovering from graduate studies and working as a community art educator. She is also a line cook. The three of them are frequenters of farmers markets and grow food and flowers in their rental-apartment gardens. They met in Vancouver, the ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-waututh) Nations.

Keep an eye on our social media in the weeks leading up to May 30th, to learn more about what our Artist Gardening activity will entail!
