Introducing Texty Tuesdays
Every 4th Tuesday of the month
Texty Tuesdays is a monthly gathering of artists / creatives / writerly types interested in the use of language as an artistic medium. The format of each Texty Tuesday will include a slideshow of examples and relevant remarks, followed by a hands-on dry media exercise, and a move toward zine production. As all Texty Tuesdays will be geared toward zine production, our goal is to spur, prompt, and provoke the production of zines to be part of the Book and Zine Fest in March 2024.

The Maker Space was bustling this past month with new faces and activities, with machine & hand sewing taking and lino print making taking centre stage. Huge thanks to our Maker Space users for doing what you do, and characterizing this space with such care and curiosity and joy. We love it!
Open Studio
It’s been about a month since we switched our weekly Open Studio gatherings to Thursday evenings. And so far, it’s going swimmingly! We're seeing a flow of new and familiar faces come through the door. Good conversation unfolds, there's coffee and tea, and free art supplies make for a pretty great night out, if we do say so ourselves!
Feel free to join our weekly activity, or you can bring your own projects &/or explore some of the supplies available (drawing, collage, mending, or zine-making to name a few).
Thursday Open Studio activities for October:
October 5 - Crochet
October 12 - Spooky Applique
October 19 - Pumpkin Carving (BYOP)
October 26 - Collage Story Making
FYI: Our Programming Coordinator, Jillian is away for the month of October. So please reach out to our Artistic Director, Leslie with questions. Leslie can be reached gallery@artspaceptbo.ca, and is happy to answer questions and help you connect...

Jinian's Take is Back!
Yep, Jinian has returned for a second semester as a Cultural Studies (Trent U) Intern. Here is where she'll capture her thoughts - sometimes about what's on exhibition, or otherwise what's on the brain.

Of all the pieces featured in Micheal Nathaniel's Come Closer, Drinking from the river of forgetfulness speaks to me the most. Something about this little gold statue sparks memories of a cartoon design from my childhood. The figure's simple stance and curved edges possess a certain innocence. It's head is missing, cutting short its innocence, but there isn’t a despair in this loss. The form of a scythe, mounted above the innocent gold figure, hangs in space not in a menacing way, but somehow friendly, dangling flowers over the figure as if in apology. Once violent turned kind. In this way, the piece speaks to an optimistic approach to pain and trauma.

Say hello to our volunteer feature of the week, Sarah Cullingham!

A few words from Sarah about her art practice and what Artspace means to her:
“My own art practice mostly involves making funny handcrafts around my kitchen table...and lots of writing, both academically and otherwise. I love volunteering at Artspace because of the people I get to work with. Plus, it's a beautiful space to work in. I have learned so much from the other volunteers and the participants at the (One City) art drop-in. It's a great way to connect and build a sense of community that centers creativity and expression. And it's a lot of fun.”
Sarah has been a warm, joyful, and reliable presence at Artspace for almost a year now. If you drop by One City’s art drop-in on Wednesday, you will almost always find her! Whether helping facilitate activites, creating alongside attendees, serving tea & coffee, or helping with set-up and tear down, Sarah is busy making others' experiences better by being at Artspace.
Big thank-you, Sarah, for all that you do!
