Project Details

What is BIPOC Gallery Day?

BIPOC Gallery Day provides a platform for the BIPOC community to come together, fostering new connections and relationships among artists, art enthusiasts, and supporters. This sense of community is essential for mutual support, collaboration, and the growth of a diverse artistic community.

During this time, our gallery operates as normal, but will be reserved for BIPOC community members, who are invited to come out, enjoy some refreshments, and participate in an arts-based activity. This is also an opportunity for BIPOC folks to view our exhibition and learn about the Maker Space.

Importantly, during BIPOC Gallery Days, attendees will be welcomed without question or judgement on their identity. We are committed to creating a safe and inclusive space where individuals can express themselves freely and authentically.

Who can apply?

This opportunity is open to artists* and arts facilitators who identify as BIPOC*.

FAQ:

What do you mean by the term BIPOC?

BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. It is a term used to refer to individuals who are not of white European descent.

How do you define "artist"?

For the purposes of this proposal, we consider an artist to be someone who has pursued and refined their skills in one or more artistic disciplines. Artistic disciplines include painting, printmaking, textiles (sewing, crochet, embroidery, etc.), performance, and paper craft (zine making, bookbinding, etc.).

How will you determine who is BIPOC?

We believe in creating an inclusive and respectful environment where individuals are trusted to self-identify. We will not be determining or questioning anyone's identity as BIPOC. Our focus is on creating a welcoming space for BIPOC community members.

Will non-BIPOC staff and volunteers be onsite during BIPOC Gallery Day?

In order for Artspace to be open to the public, 2 personnel (staff and board members) are required to be onsite at all times. This means that depending on availability, it is possible that two white staff and/or board members may be onsite during BIPOC Gallery Day. When this is the case, personnel will be present in a support capacity only, providing behind the scenes assistance with food/drink prep, dishes, coffee, moving tables, etc., in addition to whatever support is requested from attendees and the facilitator.

Will there be food?

We offer light refreshments, including GF snacks, coffee, tea, and other treats.

Will this be a regular feature of Artspace Programming going forward?

Our goal is for BIPOC Gallery days to be a regular feature of our programming well into the future, and we will strive for them to take place once per exhibition period.

Mandate

Artspace is a non-profit organization that assists artists with the presentation of new work. We change in response to the needs of artists and work to engage and inform the public about their work. Formally, our mandate aims to foster a stronger appreciation for Canadian contemporary art. In our ongoing efforts to increase public awareness, we also aim to build on our reputation as one of our region’s most vital arts organizations.

We advocate for artists. We nurture dialogue across disciplines, cultures and perspectives. We are also representatives, responsible for building ties within the community. Ours is a necessary voice in the cultural landscape, and has been since 1974. Our programming, though national in scope, is regional in spirit. In connecting artists to the community and welcoming community involvement, we continue to attract respected talent from across the country; talent we are proud to compensate with fees that exceed recommended CARFAC rates.

  • To advocate for the rights of artists

  • To take a leadership role in the interface between artists and community

  • To encourage critical investigations by enabling exploration in curation, exhibition, and performance
