Trent Centre for Women and Trans People
The Trent CWTP is a community organization dedicated to creating community, resources and advocating for people affected by gender-based marginalization in Peterborough Ontario. The CWTP is an inclusive space to meet, share, create and organize with people from the Trent, Nogojiwanong/Peterborough communities who share a commitment to our mandate.
The Centre aims to prioritize the needs of gender-marginalized individuals who experience multiple forms of oppression (such as BIPOC women). We use an intersectional social justice model that is informed by a holistic understanding of anti-oppression and feminist politics. This model aims to recognize the ways in which ideas and experiences of gender are shaped by racism, colonialism, classism, ableism, cis-heteronormativity and all other forms of oppression. Where possible we approach our work within a harm reduction lens and opt for restorative justice practices over carceral feminism.
Rhea Shahe works with the Center as their BIPOC Liaison. Her work focuses on conducting research and creating resources for BIPOC folk who are also affected by gender/sexual discrimination. Her passions include psychological research and the arts. Rhea created The BIPOC Self-Love Zine in an effort to showcase BIPOC artists within the Nogojiwanong area. Many works tend to solely focus on racialized trauma, however, this zine aims to highlight the joy of being BIPOC.

BIPOC Self-Love Zine 2021
This zine was created in an effort to showcase BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and Person of Colour) artists within the Nogojiwanong/Peterborough area. In accordance with the theme of self-love, our artists submitted pieces that focus on a self-care item or ritual that is important to them. In the following pages you will find visual art and poetry, alongside information about the creator. BIPOC perspectives are incredibly valuable to our arts community, but they are often overlooked. We hope that this zine will help highlight the talent and significance of our racialized artists. We encourage you to support the creators featured in this zine by purchasing and engaging with their work.
