"Artist-Run" Risograph Print by Space/Art
Title: Artist-Run
Artist: Anne Pasek of Space/Art
Size: 21cm x 35.5cm • 11”x14”
Edition: 55 (47 of which are available in this sale)
Inspo: This print combines archival images from Artspace's inaugural exhibition publication, 1977's Rags to Riches. It was a very special moment for the organization and for artists in Canada more broadly. Successfully lobbying for state funding, artists around the country were opening new institutions, run for and by artists, that provided space and resources to further careers outside of the commercial gallery system. As David Bierk, the centre's first director, writes, "Artspace is living proof that artists can determine their own destinies by choosing the process and direction of our own space. We offer to our participants a free, open, flexible system which lacks any commercial motives which might inhibit art of an experimental nature or the very creative process." This was a group achievement. As shown by the crowd outside of Artspace's first dedicated location, as well as the list of accessibility concerns, grocery needs, and call backs on the notes preserved from the director, it takes a village to build an institution, through many different kinds of labour. This remains true today, where artists in Peterborough and the Kawarthas continue to join together to enjoy, support, and reimagine what an artist-run centre can be.
Medium: Risograph
About Space/Art
To commemorate fifty years as an artist run centre, three board members of Artspace - Tim Laurin, Anne Pasek, and Aaron Robitaille have created a series of original prints under the collective name Space/Art.
Please help us continue to support our local arts community, artists and members by purchasing some of these works. All proceeds will go to our 50th Anniversary Fundraising initiative where we hope to raise $50,000 in 2024.
