Artspace Peterborough invites applications for the position of Assistant to the Artistic Director.

Artspace Peterborough is looking for a dedicated and experienced arts professional to join our team as the Assistant to the Artistic Director!

Job Description: 

Artspace invites applications for Assistant to the Artistic Director. This six (6) month position starts February 4, 2025 (or sooner), for 35 hours per week at $25/hour with potential to be extended. The Assistant to the Artistic Director is expected to complete their working hours on-site during operational/visitor hours (with occasional work happening during events/after hours).

The Assistant to the Artistic Director will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Assist the Artistic Director with exhibition operations: installation and ancillary programming such as artist talks and receptions.

  • Coordinate programs that include but are not limited to:

    • volunteer orientation, training and appreciation

    • educational and professional development workshops

    • program submissions

    • community partner events

  • Develop member services and corresponding Annex programming.

  • Attend to promotional communications as needed, including website and social media content, posters and pamphlets, and media releases.

  • Provide grant writing and administrative support to the Artistic Director, and to Committee Chairs and the Board of Directors as needed.

  • Additionally, the Assistant to the AD will act in a support role while on-site, performing tasks pertaining to front-of-house operations. This will include, but is not limited to: 

    • Opening and closing Artspace facilities at 378 Aylmer St N

    • Greeting visitors, providing information, and answering questions concerning exhibitions, facilities, and regulations

The successful candidate should possess the following skills and qualifications:

  • Interest in contemporary Canadian art

  • Excellent organization and communications competencies including verbal, written, and interpersonal skills

  • Experience with, and aptitude for, project management and administrative roles

  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, responsive to deadlines, work under pressure, and exercise sound judgment in setting priorities

  • The candidate being a practicing artist is also an asset, but not a requirement

  • We seek a not-for-profit professional with 10 or more years community-based arts experience and demonstrable familiarity with diverse populations. Experience in arts education is an asset.

Please note that this is an in-person position and requires the successful candidate to work from our gallery and office location. Remote work is not available for this role.

This position involves physical labour and requires the successful candidate to be able to perform tasks that may include lifting, standing, and other manual activities as needed.

Facility Access Information:

This role will be performed primarily on site at Artspace, and occasionally performed remotely with approval from the Artistic Director. All required tools and equipment are provided by Artspace. However, the Employee may choose to utilize their own tools and equipment when desired.

Gallery 1 (the main gallery) and Maker Space are fully accessible with accessible washroom facilities.
