Maker Space Workshop- Creating Community Archives through Recipes

Join artist-in-residence, Julia Huỳnh, for an afternoon of art-making, recipe sharing, and more!

Workshop Description

Cookbooks and recipes are archives full of memories and cultural traditions.

In this workshop, artist-in-residence Julia Huỳnh will discuss the importance of community-based archiving and the different ways we can preserve our stories. Participants will be asked to share a recipe of their choosing and recreating it through craft/collage and guided prompts.

Participants will then have the opportunity to scan their recipe cards and exchange them with other attendees, as well as contribute to a communal “cookbook” to be on display for the remainder of Julia's residency and during First Fridays Art Crawl in September!

All skill levels are welcome, no previous art experience is required.

About the artist

Julia Huỳnh (she/her) is a second generation Vietnamese Canadian interdisciplinary artist, community archivist, and independent researcher/writer based in and around Nogojiwanong/Peterborough. Through her practice, she is interested in investigating the use of photography, language, and music as tools to construct identities, communities, and memories within the Vietnamese diaspora. In doing so, she often turns to her family’s personal archive and reimagined archives in order to better understand her cultural identity and family history.

Julia has facilitated multiple workshops on ethics and care in archives, photovoice training, and zine-making to a wide-ranging audience of community members, student leaders, and post-secondary educators. She holds an MA in photography preservation, HBA in art & art history, and a diploma in fine arts. Currently, Julia freelances as an archival researcher for a documentary related to the Vietnamese diaspora.
