Art as Activism: Collaborative Stencil Print-Making

$0.00

This portable screenprinting workshop has its roots in community-led public art and collaboration. Come prepared to work together in a group to brainstorm, draw and print ideas collectively.

Taking place during Lan “Florence” Yee’s exhibition, Just Short of Everything, the workshop will ask participants to reflect on Yee’s work to “intervene into the standard forms of documentation” and “imagine alternative ways of reproducing images”. The exhibit will prompt us to ask, where can art as activism appear that’s unexpected?

About the Artist:

Lara Lucretia works primarily in illustration and printmaking and draws much inspiration from her gardens. Skill-sharing, collaboration, and community engagement are central to her art practice. She has illustrated and self-published two gardening books that use more page space for pictures than words.

Lara grew up in Toronto and currently lives in Lindsay. Art runs in the family, from her parents to her Danish, British, Russian and Italian ancestors. Lara founded Jakarundi Graphics Collective, which has done numerous screen printing projects and more recently large scale murals.

What does it cost?

Art as Activism is available on a pay-what-you-can basis, with a suggested donation of $20 per session to cover cost of supplies. Participants will be invited to pay with cash or card on the day of the event.

Land Acknowledgement

Artspace, a settler-founded organization, acknowledges its presence on Michi Saagig Mississauga Anishinaabeg land, known as Nogojiwanong by some and Peterborough by others. This territory falls under Treaty 20, signed in 1818, and the Williams Treaties of 1923, involving the seven Anishinaabeg communities of Alderville, Beausoleil, Curve Lake, Georgina Island, Hiawatha, Scugog Island, and Rama. We also recognize the significance of the Alderville litigation of 2018, which underscores the ongoing discussions around land rights, sovereignty, and the failure of a colonial government to honour the original spirit and intention of the treaties. In this regard, we also want to acknowledge that thousands of African-descendant people have been enslaved, displaced and judicialized on this same territory. The presence of Black Canadian communities is directly linked to the white supremacy and capitalism that motivated American, African and Caribbean colonization by European nations.

This land acknowledgement is a living document that we will continually revisit and reflect upon. We acknowledge that we have a responsibility to honour and respect the grounds on which we are privileged to gather in the pursuit of art appreciation. We hold a deep commitment to upholding Michi Saagiig Mississauga teachings about the Earth and our relations. It is essential to us to walk in partnership and collaboration with the sovereign First Nations. We do this in the spirit of reconciliation, collaboration, and artistic creation, as we collectively move forward on this shared journey.
