Brad Brackenridge, Artspace 2021 Artist in Residence

March 15 - May13, 2023

"As a curious, perennial student of his craft, Brackenridge draws on this broad vocabulary of puppetry. Playwright, designer, engineer and performer for his company The Nervous System, he frequently builds projects from scratch, skirting the fringes of outsider artist with endearing mayhem, inventing as he goes along."

Thank you to Annie Jaeger for your characteristically, attentive word-smithing in Trout in Plaid, in review of Performance/Process. Click the link above for the full article.

And thanks to those who helped make the opening reception for Performance/Process such a bustling and joyous success. Congratulations, Brad!

STILL TO COME!
Stay tuned for the remount of Brad's performance,Vertep, taking place in Gallery 2, and viewable on weekends by appointment, May 15-Jun 7. More info about that coming soon.

And lastly, Brad's Artist Talk is May 13, 1pm.

7th Annual Book and Zine Fest Sucess!

Now that’s what we call one for the books! (...get it?)

Thank you so much to everyone who made it out to our 7th Annual Book & Zine Fest! This event truly exceeded our expectations. With a total of 24 vendors and over 300 visitors who came through our doors over the course of a First Friday and a very stormy Saturday, we could not have asked for better return to the in-person B+Z experience!

Easily our favourite part was looking around the room while pausing to enjoy a coffee, and seeing the connections, laughter, and joyful exchanges unfolding all around us. Book and Zine has become such a deeply appreciated and key event for Artspace, and we look forward to offering this event for years to come.

As always, thank-you to our talented vendors and the help of our incredible team of volunteers. Thanks for making year 7 one to remember!
Incidentally, you can pencil us in for around the same time next year. 2024 is Artspace's 50th anniversary. So we've got special plans cooking for the 8th Annual B+Z. Stay tuned!

Maker Space Officially Open!

What a wonderful month it’s been for our new Maker Space!

From opening up drop-in hours, to hosting workshops, to getting together for Board member maker nights, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming so many friends and new faces through our doors. It's also given us the chance to work through the hiccups and learn some things along the way, but the positive response tells us we’re on the right track.

Curious about what the Maker Space has to offer? Itching to experience it for yourself? Take a look at these April offerings:

Maker Space Mondays

Starting April 10th, we are hosting a weekly, facilitated, open studio period in the Maker Space! Folks will be on site to familiarize visitors with tools and resources, and offer instruction. Mondays, 6-9pm. No cost and no experience required.

 Jinian's Take

Performance/Process

How do you begin to display an artist's work that is made for movement? For the specificity of story.

Performance/Process responds to this conundrum by focusing not solely on the artist's finished works but by also revealing the hidden work, time, and processes that go into his final piece’s. The decision to recreate the chaos of Brad Brackendrige's studio pulls viewers into a narrative of inspiration and time.
As artists, so much of our time is spent in the process. Abandoned attempts, experiments, countless similarly named files. Hours go into things that no one but you ends up seeing.
For this reason, the workbench is my favourite part of this exhibition. Strewn with unfinished work and the chaotic collection of a creative life. Here we see boxes of hands, ready for the moment they will be needed, and other representations of creative hoarding one does, just in case.
In addition to the fantastic and varied sculptural pieces strategically placed around the gallery, a photo collage provides additional depth and context.
Performance/Process turns Artspace into a performance space of the artistic process.

Provincial Budget Cuts to Ontario Arts Council

You may have tuned into the calls-to-action in early March in response to the Ontario Government's proposed 15% cuts to Ontario Arts Council funding. In the end, the Ford Government eliminated $5 million in one-time grant funding that the OAC received last year, the loss of which is still considered by many to be a painful move. While this reduction is half of the proposed cuts, some are calling on more stable and consistent funding by the government to avoid surprises like this in the future.

Kudos to everyone who made and continue to make their voices heard!

Staff Spotlight

Many of you know Jillian Ackert as Artspace's Maker Space Coordinator. But of course, that's not all she does. Like many folks who've worked at Artspace over the years, she's also a practicing artist (we're not called an artist-run centre for nothing).

Primarily working in relief print and film photography, Jillian's art practice is deeply inspired by her ever-evolving relationship with the land, water, trees, and the other non-human beings living close by. Themes of rest, connection, and interdependence are ever present in her work.

For the month of April, you can view some of Jillian's work at the Bridgenorth Public Library as part of the 10th Annual Spark Photo Festival. Entitled moving through, the exhibition features 35mm photographs that capture Jillian's quiet reflections on moving through the grief, disruption, learning, and calm that accompanied the COVID-19 pandemic.

To learn more about Jillian's work, check out her Spark Photo Festival contribution HERE, and you can visit her website at www.jillianrumseyart.com
