On Exhibition

Odyssey of Forever Things / Sarah Elise Hall
June 10 - August 12, 2023

Sarah Elise Hall offered Artspace volunteers a private gallery tour and orientation of her work on June 30. Stay tuned for your opportunity to do the same in the next few weeks.

Odyssey of Forever Things continues throughout July. Drop into Artspace to take in Sarah's striking work, and enjoy the air conditioning while you're at it.

Maker Space Update

If you happen to walk by the Artspace windows on a Monday evening, chances are you’ve seen the gallery bustling with visitors. Our Open Studio Mondays have been an incredible success, with so many folks stopping by to make art, craft, or just enjoy a cup of tea.

Or maybe you’ve dropped by the Gallery on a Friday or Saturday, and found a couple of people quietly working away in the Maker Space, using our sewing machine to make a new set of patio cushions, cutting mats for a photography project, or carving a new block print making.

It’s pretty spectacular to think about how far the Maker Space has come in such a short period of time! We are so proud to be able to offer this resource to the community.

If you're curious about the space and all that we have to offer, you can stop by Open Studio Mondays from 6-9pm and check it out for yourself! Join in on our weekly activity, bring your own project, and/or explore the supplies we have available.

Open Studio Mondays Schedule:

  • July 10 - Weaving
  • July 17 - Poster Making
  • July 24 - Intuitive Stitching
  • July 31 - Visible Mending

There is no cost to participate. Can’t wait to see you there!

Introducing our Summer Artist in Residence

We are absolutely THRILLED to announce our upcoming Summer Artist in Residence, Julia Huỳnh.

Over 4 weeks starting next month, Julia will be using Artspace's Maker Space to work on, and engage with the community around, her on-going and multi-phased project nhạc xuân, ở đây và ở đó (spring music, here and there).

The experimental project, VESSELS, will develop compostable forms temporarily housing herbs. VESSELS is an extension of nhạc xuân, ở đây và ở đó which explores how a garden becomes an archive and a site of Vietnamese migration and cultural preservation.

More information coming soon. For now, please join us in warm congratulations for Julia!

Employment Opportunity

Artspace is seeking a Communications and Engagement Coordinator to fulfill a part-time, 10-month contract starting later this summer.

Volunteer Spotlight

It's time to introduce another one of our spectacular volunteers, Luka Stojanovic!

Luka (he/they) is a mad, neurodivergent, queer settler, currently pursuing an M.A. in Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies (2023) at Trent University, funded by a SSHRC-Canada Graduate Scholarship. His research interests include critical disability studies, art-based research, and queer theory. He will begin a Ph.D. in Canadian Studies at Trent University in Fall 2023 exploring intersectional counternarratives of chronic pain within contemporary Canadian audio-visual media.

If you stop by on Monday evenings you’ll likely find them in the Maker Space, helping community members find what they need and making art alongside them.

His superpower? Making people feel welcome, comfortable, and cared for.

Huge thanks to Luka from everyone at Artspace!

Artspace wishes to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their support in creating our extraordinary Maker Space over the past year.
