Join FilmCraft Collective on July 25, 2026, for this opportunity to explore some of the techniques of cameraless animation.

Cameraless film, simply put, is a filmmaking technique that doesn’t use cameras. Instead, cameraless filmmakers make images directly on the filmstrip. These animations can be in-frame (frame-by-frame) or frameless. They can use or combine many different techniques and materials: painting, drawing, collage, sewing, photogramming, phytogramming, punching, stamping, ink, marker, foliage, insects, Letraset, magazines/paper, etc.

Cameraless animation challenges dominant ideas about film. The projector and amplification, rather than the camera and inscription, become the prominent mode of cinema. Cameraless animation also draws attention to how the frame is constructed as an ideological space where the filmstrip and the cinematic apparatus are made invisible.

Participants will make cameraless animations on small sections of 16mm film (which they can keep!!!)

Cameraless filmmaking can be messy, so dress accordingly.
