BIPOC Gallery Day with Julian Nakamoto

Join Julian Nakamoto to explore writing and storytelling through recollection and memory with writing three activities and short discussion after each.

About the Artist:

Julian is a recent Trent University graduate who has spent the last several years discovering his voice in the world of creation and storytelling. He loves exploring what truth and memory mean for his family histories, as well as for his writing, in order to grapple with unspoken and painful histories not often found in history books, but in the voices of mothers, aunts, and grandparents.

What is BIPOC Gallery Day?

BIPOC Gallery Day provides a platform for the BIPOC community to come together, fostering new connections and relationships among artists, art enthusiasts, and supporters. This sense of community is essential for mutual support, collaboration, and the growth of a diverse artistic community.

During this time, our gallery operates as normal, but is reserved for BIPOC community members, who are invited to come out, enjoy some refreshments, and participate in an arts-based activity. This is also an opportunity for BIPOC folks to view our exhibition and learn about our shared Community Studio space.

During BIPOC Gallery Day, attendees are welcomed without question or judgment about their identities. We are committed to creating a safe and inclusive space where individuals can express themselves freely and authentically.

FAQ:

Will non-BIPOC staff and volunteers be onsite during BIPOC Gallery Day?

Possibly! When Artspace is open to the public, 2 personnel (staff and board members) are required to be on site. This means that, depending on availability, two non-BIPOC staff and/or board members may be on site during BIPOC Gallery Day.

Personnel are present in a support capacity only, providing behind-the-scenes assistance with food/drink prep, dishes, coffee, moving tables, etc., in addition to whatever support is requested from attendees and the facilitator.

Will there be food?

We offer light refreshments, including GF snacks, coffee, tea, and other treats.

Will this be a regular feature of Artspace Programming going forward?

Our goal is for BIPOC Gallery days to be a regular feature of our programming well into the future, and we will strive for them to take place once per exhibition period.
